Our History

Founded in 1959 as the British Embassy Study Group, the British Embassy School Ankara (BESA) began as a small kindergarten housed in two rooms of the British Council, attended by a handful of young children. This modest start laid the foundation for a school that has grown and evolved over the decades, adapting to meet the needs of an expanding international community in Ankara.

Since its founding, BESA has relocated twice, each time expanding its facilities and enhancing its offerings. In 1964, the school moved to its current site on the diplomatic grounds of the British Embassy in Ankara. This location not only offers a secure and inspiring environment but also reflects our strong historical ties to the British community and our commitment to fostering international-mindedness.

Today, BESA continues to honour its legacy by providing a high-quality British education while embracing the diverse cultural heritage of our students and families from around the world.
